First, prominent black actor Morgan Freeman has a mysterious car crash. Afterwards, it is reported that he was in the company of a ‘lady friend’. Soon after this incident, in which he breaks his arm and shoulder, the actor files for divorce from his wife of 24 years Myna Colley-Lee. Now, after keeping his private life out of the public view for so long, Mr Freeman has been dubbed ‘The Darkest Knight’. So far, press reports that Freeman is in a relationship outside of his marriage are unconfirmed but the reaction has not been one of vehement distain usually associated when an actor gets on the wrong side of their wedding vows. Morgan Freeman is such a well loved actor, it might take some really sordid accusations to spoil his public character.
Then we have the untimely deaths of Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. Both very successful, and irreplaceable, black actors. Both Hayes and Mac were outspoken black activists. Isaac Hayes played a big role in raising awareness for black rights and issues in the 60′s, whereas Bernie Mac used his comedy to highlight some of the inequalities faced by black people in contemporary times.
It might be me being paranoid, but is it not strange that three of our most popular and well loved black actors have either almost been taken from us or actually have been?
What is going on? Who is next? With the prospect of a new black president in America, are there sinister powers moving to eliminate some popular support from his campaign? Although Bernie Mac died of what could be classed as natural causes, and my heart goes out to his family and friends.
I don’t know… I can’t make up my mind.
